چکیده

Lurie et al. ' have found that administration of thyroid hormones can increase the level of native resistance to tuberculosis in rabbits, and that thyroidectomy and antithyroid drugs have the opposite effect. On the other hand, the harmful effects of iodides on the clinical manifestations of human leprosy are well known. 0 'Byrne2 and Roj as' have reported favourable responses in the treatment of this disease with thiouracil and methimazole . These reports would indicate a substantial difference in the effects of thyroid-related compounds on two infections produced by bacteria which are so closely related taxonomic ally. To further investigate these relations we treated mice with thyroid-related compounds and then infected them with another closely related mycobacteria, the Stefansky bacillus . Seventy albino-swiss mice, 7 weeks old, were divided into 4 groups and were treated as shown in the Table 1 .

The effect of plasma on the in vitro uptake or binding by human red cells of radioactive I-131 labeled L-thyroxine and L-triiodothyronine.

Thyroxine is bound to a serum protein which appears in the electrophoretogram just ahead of alpha-2 globulin (1-4). Triiodothyronine also associates with this thyroxine binding globulin (T.B.G.) but can be displaced readily with thyroxine -while triiodothyronine will not readily displace thyroxine. Deiss, Albright, and Larson (5) suggested that the firm binding of thyroxine to T.B.G. might acco...

Congenital Hypothyroidism Due To Maternal Radioactive Iodine Exposure During Pregnancy

Radioactive iodine (RAI) is used effectively in the treatment of hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer, but it is contraindicated during pregnancy. RAI treatment during pregnancy can lead to fetal hypothyroidism, mental retardation and increased malignancy risk in the infant. Pregnancy tests must be performed before treatment in all women of reproductive age. However, at times, RAI is being used b...

The lack of effect of methimazole therapy in lepromatous leprosy. Reassessment by examination of bacterial morphology.

Following O'Byrne's report ( If)) of the efficacy of antithyroid drugs in leprosy, an examination of the mechanism of action of methimazole in lepromatous leprosy was undertaken. In a preliminary report of this study (n), a lack of correspondence was noted be tween the clinical appearance of the patients and the histopathologic appearance of serial skin biopsies obtained during methimazole ther...
